Notes
PrerequisitesYou should be familiar with or have completed the Viewing Forms exercise in the Review section (Program Operations tutorial). ObjectiveIn this exercise, you will use the Notes screen to enter supplemental information and append sections of the client letter. FactsEnter the following information for a sample client: |
| Client number | TUTNOTES |
| Client name | Supplemental Information |
| Notes | Data entry: |
| Statement 1 | This exercise illustrates the uses of the Notes input. |
| Statement 2 | This statement is the second one entered. |
| Letter Misc 1 | This is the first paragraph in the client letter. |
| Letter Misc 2 | This is the beginning of the final paragraph in the client letter. |
View the Client Notes and Client Letter at the Forms tab. Note the placement of the letter items in the client letter.
Program Considerations
- You can use Notes to add supplemental explanations, sub-schedules, or supporting statements to a Federal and/or state tax return(s). You can attach these notes as statements or include them as part of the client letter. All Worksheet notes print with the worksheets and all Statement notes print with the statements as designated in the Items To Print options. For e-filing, Statements are included in the e-file and worksheets are not.
By default, the Letter Misc 1 selection inserts the text as an opening paragraph and the Letter Misc 2 selection inserts the text as the beginning sentence of the closing paragraph in the Client Letter.
- When you type your notes, the text automatically wraps from one line to the next, so you do not need to press [Enter] at the end of each line.
- The Notes input for each module can be found in the following screens:
- Individual (1040) - Screen 47
- Partnership (1065) - Screen 34
- Corporate (1120) - Screen 42
- S-Corporate (1120S) - Screen 39
- Fiduciary (1041) - Screen 51
- Exempt (990) - Screen 59
- Estate (706) - Screen 37
- Gift (709) - Screen 13
- Benefit Plan (5500) - Screen 25
- The Print As section contains an additional option, Schedule K-1, in the Partnership, S-Corp, and Fiduciary modules.
These entries print as Supplemental Information on the Schedule K-1.
How?

Tips & Shortcuts
You can use keystrokes to cut ([Ctrl]+[X]), copy ([Ctrl]+[C]), and paste ([Ctrl]+[V]) text into the Notes screen. You can also right-click highlighted text to access these features.
Review
You should have a sample client with Client Notes and a modified Client Letter generated from the entries in the Notes screen.
Troubleshooting
Problem: The text toolbar is grayed out in the Notes screen when I select Statement.
Solution: The text toolbar is only applicable for Letter Misc 1 and Letter Misc 2. All statements and worksheets are formatted to appear like statements and worksheets that are automatically produced by the program.
