Help

Objective

In this exercise, you will learn how to use Lacerte's context-sensitive help, general program help, and How Do I... help.

Facts

Context sensitive help: At the Clients tab, open the Getting to Know the Clients Screen topic and note that the Contents tab in the 2005 Lacerte Help Center contains topics that relate to operating the Lacerte program.

Lacerte Help Center: From the Help menu, open Contents & Search, then select Getting Started. Use the Navigation List to locate the Sharing settings and options video tutorial.

Help Me: Click the Help Me button in the upper right corner above the client list. Find and open the Change the data path to see other clients? topic. Resize the Help Me window and enable the pushpin to keep the Help Me window available at all times.

Program Considerations

Context-sensitive help displays information pertinent to the location of the cursor and is available anywhere in the program.

The Lacerte Help Center provides access to all topics regardless of where your cursor is located. Topics can be accessed in four ways:

Lacerte Help Center

A - Contents: Provides the ability to search for help topics grouped by workflow and/or activity.

B - Contents Shortcuts: This pane provides shortcut links to some of the common help topics, eliminating the need to search for these items.

C - Search: Use the Help Center Search to find information in any of Lacerte's in-program help files. You can limit the results of your search by using the checkboxes at the bottom of the Search results pane.

D - Index: Using the Index allows you to immediately search and view help topics that match the letters of the keyword(s) you are entering. The more letters you enter the more exact the search result that is displayed.

Help Me topics provide the necessary steps to perform tasks related to the active screen.

How?

To access context sensitive help:

  1. At the Clients tab, press [F1].

To access Help through the Lacerte Help Center:

  1. On the Help menu, click Contents & Search.

  2. Double-click Getting Started in the list of topics, and then double-click Watch Video Tutorials.
  3. Click Sharing settings and options in the Video Tutorials pane to watch the video.

To access and use the Help Me feature:

  1. Click the Help Me button in the upper-right corner of the window (if the Help Me pane is not already open).

  2. Click the Change the data path to see other clients? topic in the Common Questions section.

Note: The list of available Common Questions and Tech Support Alerts will change as you navigate through the program.

  3. Click the pushpin button in the upper right corner of the Help Me window. The pushpin is now enabled (the button will rotate 90 degrees clockwise ).
  4. Move the cursor out of the Help Me window (towards the top of the screen). Note that the Help Me window auto-hides, leaving only the Search field visible.

  5. Move the cursor back over any part of the Help Me window, and note that the window will resize (expand) back to its original size. This allows you to keep the Help Me functionality available at all times and not lose any workspace.
