Program Considerations
The Diagnostics screen allows you to review possible input problems on a tax return or e-filed return, and all overrides used in a tax return. You can switch between viewing Diagnostics and Overrides by using the View list. The Diagnostics screen filters any warnings and lists them in categories.
Critical Diagnostic warnings list items that interfere with filing a correct return. These warnings are for entries that you must complete or correct before filing a tax return. Informational Diagnostics list items that will not interfere with processing or filing a return, such as electronic payment information or tax liability tips. Overrides lists all overrides used in the tax return (input fields marked with an [O] indicator).
When you click a warning or override in the list, the program takes you directly to the field generating the warning or containing the override. Once you have corrected the input, the related warning/override disappears from the list.
You can choose to display all diagnostics, diagnostics for just a federal or state return, or diagnostics in categories such as General or Main Form .
How?
To view diagnostics by category:
- Click the category in the Diagnostic Filter list.
To view all diagnostics:
- Click All Diagnostics in the Diagnostic Filter list.
To jump to the input field and correct the warning:
- Click the warning.
- If the warning is just informational, you can choose to ignore it.
To ignore a diagnostic:
- Check the box next to the warning.
Tips & Shortcuts
You can use the keyboard to select a diagnostic warning or override based on the first letter of the listed item.
Troubleshooting
Problem: I can't view the Interactive Diagnostics.
Solution: REP access may be required to process (see the Remote Entry Processing exercise).
