Getting Started

This section is designed to provide access to the websites and/or forms required to begin electronically filing returns and provide answers to frequently asked questions. In order to participate in the IRS e-file program you need to submit Form 8633. You can do this online using the e-Services e-file application. The e-Services e-file application is similar to the paper-based application, Form 8633, in the information about the firm and its Principals and Responsible Officials that you will provide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Which is faster, to apply online or to print and mail the form?

A. Most clients have reported that the online application provides for a faster turnaround time, in some instances a matter of days, rather than weeks. However, we always recommend to begin the application process well ahead of when needed.

Q. Does Lacerte require a separate application or deposit in order to e-file returns?

A. The answer is No to both.  Enter your EFIN (Electronic Filing Identication Number) under Settings>Options>Firm Info in the program and after a few program settings you are ready to e-file returns. There is no deposit required to e-file returns as well as no minimum on the number of returns e-filed.

Q. Is there a deadline for applying for an EFIN or updating an existing 8633?

A. There is no longer a deadline for applying for an EFIN, or updating 8633 information with the IRS, and may be done year around. However, we do suggest that applications or updates be completed well in advance to allow for delays that may occur.

Q. Once I am approved by the IRS, can I automatically e-file all state returns also?

A. The answer is no. Most states do not require a separate application in order to e-file.  However, some states require a separate application or notification process. The EF Atlas contains the requirements for all states. Please refer to the following link: 8633 ERO requirements by state or click on any state at the Atlas home page for additional information.

Q. Is my EFIN the same as an ERO PIN?

A. The answer is no. The EFIN is a six digit number assigned by the IRS. The ERO PIN is used to electronically sign a paperless signature form and is five digits. This number can be any number of your choice with the exception of all zeroes.

Q. Do I have to reapply for an EFIN every year?

A. No.

Q. Is the 8633 form in the Lacerte program?

A. The form is not part of the Lacerte program library but there is a link in the program to the IRS e-services site during program setup.

Q. I have applied for an EFIN number. Can I e-file returns while waiting for approval?

A. The answer is no. Only approved ERO's with a valid EFIN can e-file 1040 Fed and state returns.

Q. I understand that I need an EFIN to e-file a return but is there any way I can enter a number just to see how the process works?

A. Yes, if you would like to go through the steps to e-file a dummy or test return, enter all 9's in the EFIN field under SETTINGS>OPTIONS>FIRM INFO. A return can then be generated which will allow you to simulate validating, creating and sending an e-file return. This number can not be used to e-file returns.
